The process can be understood if you think about how water freezes.  When water reaches a temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, it begins to crystallize and freeze.  When in liquid form, sodium acetate will crystallize and freeze when there is a change in temperature as well.  This process is called "super cooling" in which the liquid actually becomes hot instead of actually freezing.  

Inside the pod is a small corrugated metal clip that is used to provide this change.  By bending or using a "clicking" motion with the clip, it causes a change in the solutions temperature and begins to crystallize and produce heat.  The pod will quickly reach a peak temperature of 130 degrees Fahrenheit.   The Solpod can provide heat anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the pods size and how it is insulated.

After you use the solpod and want to re-activate it, simply boil water and reduce to a medium heat.  It is recommended that you place a cloth at the bottom of the pot to avoid your pod from sticking.  Insert the Solpod for approximately 8 to 10 minutes or until the entire solution is fully liquefied.   

You have to completely melt every crystal, or the solpod will quickly re-solidify.   Turn off heat and let pod sit until cool to touch.  Remove the solpod from the water and store in a liquid state until your next use. Remember, the pod has to be at room temperature before it can be activated again. 

You can repeat this cycle forever, just as you can freeze and melt water as many times as you like.  That is why Solpods are the best value for your money when it comes to purchasing an instant heat source.
